Who rules the roost in Britain? Who is leader of the pack in the UK? Looking at decision-making on several major projects over recent years, it seems that animals have a remarkable amount of influence, including over decisions to establish a nuclear power plant, a theme park, and the HS2 railway line. This year, in an attempt to avoid harm coming to local fish, millions has been spent by the energy company EDF on a speaker system to deter the fish from approaching the site of the Hinkley Point nuclear power station. Meanwhile, a couple of years ago, it was revealed that, in order to provide a safe location for them from the nearby high speed HS2 railway lines, bats have had millions of pounds spent to provide them with a tunnel. Then, shortly before that, a proposed theme park (to be tied in with the Paramount film studio) to be built in Swanscombe, Kent, was cancelled, with a key consideration in this decision being concern for the impact the theme park was expected to have on local wildlife.
